Position Information

Position Title: Director of Safety

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Job Summary: We are seeking a Director of Safety to lead and manage all safety-related initiatives across our construction operations. This role will ensure compliance with safety regulations, promote a culture of safety, and minimize risks for employees and our subcontractors. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with a deep understanding of safety in construction environments and a passion for continuous improvement.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in OHS, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certifications such as NSCO (National Construction Safety Officer), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of experience in construction safety, on residential and commercial projects.

Job Duties

  • Develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Set strategic direction by leading high-level site audits and assessments to mitigate risk and ensure adherence to industry standards.
  • Direct and oversee the root cause analysis of incidents, driving organization-wide corrective actions to foster continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to site teams, fostering a culture of safety awareness and accountability.
  • Liaison any conditions with department of labor as applicable.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to shape and manage the safety strategy, budget, and performance objectives, ensuring alignment with broader business goals.
  • Monitor and analyze safety metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Communicate safety performance insights and strategic recommendations to senior management through comprehensive, actionable reports.
  • Lead, Coach and Manage the entire safety department and direct reports.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and regulatory changes.

Job Capabilities/Performance Standards

  • Proven leadership experience in safety program management.
  • Strong knowledge of OHSA standards and other applicable safety regulations.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively train and mentor diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in safety management software and tools.
  • Strong team management abilities, with the capacity to motivate and inspire a diverse project team.
