Position Information

Position Title: Senior Cost Accountant – Construction Division

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

This role is right for you if you have solid cost accounting experience in the building construction industry and understand the nuances of how construction activities impact the overall financial picture of an organization.

Required Education and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA designation considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction cost accounting with progression of accountabilities.

Job Duties

Project Accounting / Job Costing:

  • Maintain and manage project job cost records for multiple-year construction projects.
  • Manage job cost transactions and allocate costs to appropriate projects in consultation with the Project Manager.

Project Reconciliation:

  • Drive the identification and investigation of variances and discrepancies of overall project costs in consultation with project teams.
  • Monitor vendors and sub-contractor payments against agreed-to payment schedules and identify variances or discrepancies for actioning by Accounting Specialists.  Reconcile accounts payable and receivable balances on a monthly basis.
  • Monitor inventory and materials costs for variance against master schedule and budget.
  • Ensure accurate and timely billing and invoicing for projects including confirmation of work complete on project site.

Reporting:

  • Track and prepare job cost reports of budget to actuals for analysis by project teams to accurately forecast overall cost to complete. 
  • Generate adhoc job costing or financial reports for project managers and senior management detailing specific information as needed.
  • Prepare working files for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting under direction of Corporate Controller.

Compliance & Auditing:

  • Assist with internal and external audits and consistently maintain proper documentation and records for audit purposes.
  • Utilize construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Procore) for job costing and financial management ensuring accuracy and integrity of data in accounting systems.
  • Consistently adhere to accounting processes and systems and ensure adherence by cross-departmental stakeholders.

Job Capabilities/Performance Standards

  • Proficiency in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, AutoDesk).
  • Strong understanding of project accounting principles and practices.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
