Position Information

Position Title: Estimator/Quantity Surveyor

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Reports to: Manager of Estimating & Drawing Control

Job Summary: This role is accountable for the accurate and timely completion of cost estimates across multiple active design-build projects, managing the input and updates of critical project data into tracking software, and participating in development of processes and tracking systems for continuous improvement of project budgeting.

Required Education and Experience

Education:

  • Construction Management Technology or related engineering or construction discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in construction estimating or project coordination.

Job Duties

  • Complete quantity take offs from design drawings across all phases of design-build multi-residential construction projects from initial design through issued for construction documents, as well as for changes/revisions.
  • Gather and compile cost data for development of detailed construction cost estimates.
  • Develop and issue bill of quantities and scope of work documents suitable for tender, prepare budgets, and other cost control documentation.
  • Work closely with project managers to ensure material deliveries and project progress is on track.
  • Prepare regular reports on project status, costs, and financial performance.
  • Maintain comprehensive contract document control records.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal clients, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Work closely with estimating and project management team to facilitate development of custom Excel spreadsheets using advanced formulas, pivot tables, macros, etc. to manage estimating data including cost/sq foot evaluations, project cost comparisons, bid levelling, etc.
  • Compile product pricing and availability in coordination with Procurement.
  • Maintain dynamic project cost tracking systems to ensure accurate data management and recovery at end of each project.
  • Update and manage database of historical component, assembly and holistic costing data to coincide with corporate construction standards cataloguing.
  • Create presentation documents to accurately demonstrate the holistic pricing details and exclusions used for the preparation of the budget.

Job Capabilities/Performance Standards

  • Knowledge of construction estimating processes, building codes, and regulations.
  • Proactive self-starter.
  • Proficient in project management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understands the value of project documentation and takes ownership of this function.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Exceptional information tracking and software skills with advanced excel capabilities including use of formulas, pivot tables, macros, etc.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently for a considerable portion of the time articulate self well in a team setting.
  • Can manage multiple tasks and competing priorities. Handles pressure well.
  • Shows curiosity and interest in learning new ways of performing tasks or in systemizing work to allow for greater administrative efficiencies.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and with acceptable driver’s abstract.
