West Bedford Transitional Health is Atlantic Canada’s first stand-alone transitional care centre, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The centre was built in two phases; phase one is a five-storey, 68-bed building, and phase two is six storeys and features 110 beds.

Phase two also includes new specialized units: four bariatric units, 18 behavioural units, four Transition to Home apartments, an enclosed Wellness Garden, an outdoor Rehabilitation and Re-enablement Garden, and Classroom and Community Programming space.

For phase one, Design Build Solutions retrofitted an existing structure to meet the needs of the type of care delivered in transitional health environments. This consisted of widening and adding stairwells, adding a wider elevator, and widening hallways. As experts in B2 occupancy building code classification, our team was able to easily step in and make these changes, opening the building quicker than estimated timelines.
